Life on Life’s Terms vs. Life on God’s Terms: Finding Balance in Addiction Recovery
Welcome to Unity for Recovery—a space for healing, connection, and spiritual growth.
In the journey of addiction recovery, two powerful phrases often guide the way: “life on life’s terms” and “life on God’s terms.” While they may sound similar, these guiding principles offer unique perspectives. Together, they can help build a solid foundation for long-term sobriety, peace, and purpose.
🌿 What Does It Mean to Live Life on Life’s Terms?
This is about learning to accept life just as it comes—without filters or fantasies. Life won’t always be easy. In fact, it may be uncomfortable, unfair, or downright painful. But when we embrace it as it is, we begin to build emotional strength.
- Facing challenges without running or numbing out
- Taking responsibility for your emotions and actions
- Relying on the tools of recovery: meetings, step work, sponsorship, and community
You don’t have to like what’s happening to accept it. You just have to stop fighting it.
🙏 Life on God’s Terms: A Path of Surrender and Trust
Where life on life’s terms brings us back to earth, life on God’s terms lifts our eyes to something greater. This perspective calls us to surrender, not as a sign of weakness, but as a powerful act of trust.
- Turning your will and life over to a Higher Power (Step 3)
- Practicing spiritual principles like humility, gratitude, and faith
- Trusting that everything—even the difficult stuff—has meaning or a lesson
You don’t need to follow a specific religion. In AA and many recovery paths, your Higher Power is personal, shaped by your own understanding and experience.
⚖️ The Balance Between Acceptance and Faith
In the best moments of recovery, we find ourselves walking the line between the two:
“I accept what’s happening (life on life’s terms), and I trust that I’m being guided through it (life on God’s terms).”
This balance brings deep inner peace. You do your part. You take the next right step. And you trust that the results will unfold as they’re meant to.
💭 Reflective Question:
Where in your life are you being called to accept something—and where are you being invited to surrender?
