1. How to Find & Attend Your First AA Meeting

  1. Locate a meeting: Use the AA directory or ask a sponsor—choose a “Beginner” or “Open” meeting.
  2. Arrive early: Introduce yourself to the chairperson—say “I’m new” so they can guide you.
  3. Listen & Observe: Note the format (sharing order, readings, closing prayer).
  4. Share when ready: At the newcomer break, say your first name and “I’m an alcoholic.”

3. Becoming a Sponsor & Finding One

Sponsorship is the backbone of AA peer support. Here’s how to connect:

  1. Identify potential sponsors: Look for someone with 1+ year of continuous sobriety whose share resonates with you.
  2. Ask directly: Approach them after the meeting: “Would you sponsor me in working the Steps?”
  3. Set expectations: Agree on frequency (weekly calls, meetings) and confidentiality.
  4. Mutual commitment: A sponsor guides you through the Steps; you commit to honesty and follow‑through.

4. Exercise: Host Your Own Peer Circle

Ready to give back? Try facilitating a small circle:

  1. Select 4–6 peers and a comfortable space (in-person or online).
  2. Open with the Serenity Prayer, then read AA Preamble.
  3. Invite each person to share for 2–3 minutes—no cross-talk.
  4. Close with gratitude: each names one takeaway.

5. Reflection Prompts

  1. What fears did I face at my first meeting?
  2. How did it feel to welcome someone new?
  3. What qualities am I looking for in a sponsor?
  4. How will I support others at my next meeting?
