The Intake Valve: Steps 6 & 7
Steps 6 and 7 are the Engine Overhaul. We have identified the faulty parts in our inventory; now we ask the New Employer to remove them so we can operate at full power.
The Willingness to Change
After settling the account in Step 5, I realized that I couldn't just "stop drinking" and keep my old, crooked way of thinking. My "Faulty Parts"—the anger, the ego, the dishonesty—were the very things that kept causing the engine to seize up. I was entirely ready to let them go because I saw they were no longer "useful" to the shop.
I/We realized that the Psychic Change happens when the New Employer takes the tools. We don't "fix" ourselves; we simply become Entirely Willing to have our defects removed. In the 1940s, this wasn't a long debate. It was a humble request: "Employer, take the parts that are blocking my usefulness to You and others."
The Mechanic: The Overhaul
Step 6 is the Willingness. Step 7 is the Action of asking. We stop trying to "manage" our flaws and we hand them over for replacement.
- The Faulty Parts: Every defect of character that makes us un-useful to the New Employer's design.
- The Overhaul: The process of removing the old "Manager's" habits and replacing them with the Employer's instructions.
- The Result: A state of Neutrality. We are no longer fighting the drink or our flaws; they simply lose their grip on the engine.
This is the "Pivotal Point" of the internal rebuild. Once the defects are being handled, we are finally ready to go out and settle our debts with the world in Steps 8 and 9.
🔧 Mechanic’s Order for Today:
The Humble Request. Look at the "Column 4" flaws you found in your inventory. Ask the New Employer: "Take every single one of these that stands in the way of my usefulness to You." Don't hold anything back.
The Overhaul is a partnership. You provide the willingness; the New Employer provides the power.
