The Intake Valve: Step 10
Step 10 is Daily Maintenance. We have overhauled the engine; now we must check the oil and the gauges every day to ensure we stay in the "Zone of Neutrality."
Keeping the Shop Floor Swept
After settling the line of credit in Step 9, I felt a new freedom. But the Oldtimers warned me: "The Manager is still looking for a job." If I let the "Damaged Goods" of resentment or dishonesty sit on the shelf for even one day, the shop starts to smell like the old life again.
I/We realized that Step 10 is the Spot-Check Inventory. We don't wait for a year to "look at the books" anymore. We do it as we go. In the 1940s, they taught that if you find a leak, you fix it immediately before it blows the whole engine. This is how we maintain the Psychic Change.
The Mechanic: The Daily Scan
Step 10 is the "Watch" phase. We continue to use the Four Columns from Step 4, but we apply them in real-time.
- Watch: Identifying resentment, fear, or dishonesty the moment it hits the floor.
- Ask: Immediately asking the New Employer to remove the defect.
- Discuss: Talking to another person at once if it sticks.
- Amend: Making the restitution immediately if we have harmed anyone.
The result is Neutrality. We aren't "fighting" the drink or the world; we are simply keeping the engine tuned so those things no longer have a "hook" in us.
🔧 Mechanic’s Order for Today:
The 24-Hour Shift. At the end of today, look back at your "Shop Floor." Did you let any anger or dishonesty sit there? If so, settle it now. Don't let it stay on the books overnight.
Maintenance is easier than a total rebuild. Keep the oil clean today.
