Newcomer's Guide: How to Join an Online Recovery Meeting

Finding Your Seat in the Virtual Room

If you are new to online recovery support groups, it is perfectly normal to feel a bit of "tech anxiety" before your first meeting. At Unity for Recovery, we want to ensure that the process of connecting with others is as simple and stress-free as possible. Recovery is about connection, and these digital tools are simply the bridge that brings us together.

What You Need to Get Started

To join a virtual meeting, you don't need expensive equipment. Most modern devices are already equipped with everything you need:

  • A Device: A smartphone, tablet, or computer with an internet connection.
  • Audio: Most people use their device's built-in speakers and microphone, or a simple pair of headphones.
  • The Platform: Most meetings use Zoom. You can download the app for free or simply join through your web browser.

Step-by-Step: Joining the Meeting

  1. Find a Meeting: Visit our Online Support Page and select a meeting that fits your schedule.
  2. Click the Link: At the scheduled time, click the meeting link. Your device will likely ask if you want to open the meeting app—select "Yes."
  3. Choose Your Audio: Select "Join with Computer Audio" or "Join with Internet Audio" so you can hear others and be heard if you choose to speak.

A Note on Anonymity and Comfort

In keeping with the traditions of recovery, your level of participation is entirely up to you. Many newcomers choose to keep their cameras off for their first few meetings while they listen to the Experience, Strength, and Hope of others. There is no requirement to speak or show your face until you feel comfortable doing so.

These non-denominational meetings are focused on the shared goal of sobriety. You will find that the virtual room is a respectful, supportive environment where everyone is walking a similar path.

Singleness of Purpose

By staying focused on our Singleness of Purpose, we ensure that the message of recovery remains the priority. When you join these meetings, you are joining a community dedicated to wellness and mutual support. We look forward to seeing you there.
