We discovered that our problem wasn't a lack of character; it was a physical allergy that made one drink too many and a thousand not enough.
For decades, the world viewed the alcoholic as a weak-willed person who simply couldn't "control" themselves. But in 1939, Dr. William D. Silkworth gave us a new lens: The Physical Allergy. This isn't just a theory; it is the cornerstone of our Step 1 experience. We found that once we put alcohol into our systems, a physical "phenomenon of craving" was triggered that the average temperate drinker never experiences.
The Phenomenon of Craving: Why Willpower Fails
Most people can have one drink and stop. For us, that first drink acts like a match to a fuse. We found that alcohol produces an "allergic reaction" in our bodies—not in the sense of hives or itching, but in the sense of an abnormal physical demand for more. This is why willpower fails. You cannot use willpower to stop an allergic reaction once it has started. We discovered that the only solution for this physical reality is total abstinence, but that required a mental and spiritual change first.

Dr. Silkworth noted that we are "restless, irritable and discontented" unless we can again experience the sense of ease and comfort which comes at once by taking a few drinks. We found that the "Doctor’s Opinion" validates our struggle. It tells us that we aren't bad people trying to get good; we are sick people trying to get well. This medical validation was the bridge that allowed many of us to finally concede to our innermost selves that we were truly powerless.
"These allergic types can never safely use alcohol in any form at all."

The Necessity of a "Psychic Change"
Dr. Silkworth concluded that unless an alcoholic could experience an "entire psychic change," there was very little hope. He recognized that medicine could detox the body, but it couldn't fix the mind that led us back to the drink. This is where the 12 Steps come in. By clearing the Mental Fog and addressing the Spiritual Malady, we find the power to stay away from the first drink that triggers the allergy.
